At Feathers of A Flock, volunteers help make it possible for us to provide compassionate care, enrichment, education, and a safe environment for the parrots who depend on us.

Whether you have years of experience with parrots or simply want to learn, there may be a place for you here. 

Caring for parrots is about much more than feeding and cleaning. Our birds need safe, clean environments, enrichment, social interaction, attention, organization, and people who are willing to show up consistently. Volunteers help us accomplish the many tasks that keep the sanctuary running while giving our parrots opportunities to interact with caring people. Your time can make a meaningful difference.

New to Parrots?  

That's Okay. 

You don't need to be a parrot expert to care about parrots. We understand that many people who want to volunteer are eager to learn but may not have experience working with birds. We'll help you understand our sanctuary's procedures, safety expectations, and the individual needs of our flock.

What matters most is your willingness to learn, follow instructions, treat the birds respectfully, and be dependable.

 Before You Volunteer 

 A Few Things to Know 

 Volunteering around parrots can be rewarding, but it can also be physically demanding.

Depending on the volunteer role, you may be:

• Standing for extended periods
• Cleaning
• Lifting or carrying supplies
• Working around feathers, food, and cleaning materials
• Working around birds that may bite or behave unpredictably
• Working in indoor or outdoor sanctuary environments

Volunteer duties will be matched to your abilities, experience, and training.

The safety of our volunteers and our birds comes first.

What We Ask From Our Volunteers

• Treat every bird with patience and respect
• Follow sanctuary safety and handling procedures
• Follow instructions from sanctuary leadership
• Respect each bird's individual boundaries

• Help keep sanctuary areas clean and safe
• Communicate when they cannot fulfill a commitment
• Work cooperatively with other volunteers

Do I need previous parrot experience? 

No. Some positions may require previous experience, but many opportunities can be learned through training and supervision.

Do I have to work directly with the birds?

No.  Grant writing, fundraising, photography, outreach, Construction or maintenance, Event planning  and other opportunities may not involve direct bird care.

How old do I have to be? 

Volunteer age requirements will depend on the position. Please contact us if you are interested in volunteering with a minor between 13 -17 years old.

Can I volunteer occasionally?

Yes. We may have opportunities for special events, projects, fundraising activities, and other occasional needs.

Can I bring my own bird?

For the safety and health of the sanctuary flock, personal pets should not be brought to the sanctuary unless specifically authorized by sanctuary leadership.

Will I be able to handle the parrots?

Bird handling is never automatic. It depends on the individual bird, your training and experience, and the policies of the sanctuary.

How do I volunteer?
 

1. Read over our Volunteer Agreement Packet to see if volunteering is right for you. 
2. Once you've decided, fill out a application form and submit it below 
3. Connect: After receiving your application, our Volunteer Coordinator will reach out to you confirming your application. (Because Feathers of A Flock is entirely volunteer-run, communication can be delayed by up to a week)
4. Opportunities: The Volunteer Coordinator will inform you of the current volunteer opportunities available, and will provide you with helpful resources to get started.
